i fell in love with swedish pop/folk band HELLO SAFERIDE last summer in the basement of Smedly's. i couldn't help but wrap singer Annika Norlin's cuddly, airily sexy, innocent-sounding, absolutely fun voice around me in the dark to keep me company. her songs have always had a sense of flippant intimacy that seems to tickle the line between comical and heartfelt. since then she released some singles, and a swedish language album under the band name

[i seem to have a real soft spot for swedish girls with cute bangs and good taste in grey clothes]

well, now there's a new album to keep me company in the dark, and it's doing an EXCELLENT job of it. it's called More Modern Short Stories From Hello Saferide, and is out on Razzia Records

The Decemberists have something new: Always a Bridesmaid, A Singles Series
and I'm From Barcelona recently put out a new album: Who Killed Harry Houdini?

the Decemberists songs seem so light and easy, in only the way a thoughtfully crafted Decemberist song can sound.

I'm From Barcelona have taken a more sentimental? downturn in their soph effort?...there are still a few relaxable pop funzies in the lineup. [they're swedish btw]

sooo.... CHAIRLIFT have a lot of things going very well for them:
-competent and interestingly fresh vocals
-details of sound that are o-so-required in today's age of music production
-refreshingly relaxed arrangements of rock techniques
-super duper sfx
- ... oh yeah, and they TOTALLY have that one killer ipod-worthy single

there was supposed to be a block party on my street today, but it rained.
so instead of enjoying bbq/bands/natty boh/new people
i decided to discover my new rock crush/fling.
i like to have a crush on a different rock band every 4 or 5 months or so. [it aids digestion]

i'm actually rather picky with my rock crushes. [turns out i don't actually "like" all rock music]
first of all, to "get asked out on a date as my rock crush", the band needs to play rock music, not quirky/gimmicky indie shit like most of the bands i like.

but the band has to put out more than just decent rock n roll. i need excitement, intrigue, something unexpected, and of course one of those killer songs with just the right amount of catch-and-release teasing and explosion and longing and satisfaction [and a facebook status quoteable line] that my self needs.
]]]my most recent Rock Crush, in the beginning of the summer, was Frightened Rabbit, who i had the pleasure of hooking up with hardcore in louisiana. [it takes more than fucking someone you don't know to keep warm].
when i listen to my latest crush, i can't help but be reminded (fondly) of Frightened Rabbit a little bit. [i guess that's what happens with crushes/relaishs]

anyway, i found my new Rock Crush:

Stricken City are a "standard" 4 piece rock band from London. ("standard" meaning none of the crazy synths/chimes/violins/swedish monologues/h20 sfx/NES/"ethnic" children laughing/gunshots/harpsichords/cowbell/bongos/electrobeats/bassoons that i normally swoon over)
essentially, what i'm trying to say is that Stricken City has earned my "sleep in my bed" approval as my new Rock Crush...

bardou is that 'one killer song' that really hooked me hard. i just ask that if you listen to this song at all, try to embrace it, turn it up as loud as you can, and listen to it the whole way through, with no expectations. take it as it comes and enjoy it. it's totally worth it!! [if you're into that kind of stuff]
the moment of: "i hope that i will never be alone" makes me tear up [in a sad but happy way]

[of course, daft punk already assured us that we are human, after all, but it's good to know that the killers can reinvent the age-old question of the status of our humanity]

as a die-hard killers fan, i'm what you call "super stoked" for their new album Day & Age which'll come out in november. the new single, Human, is bringing The Killers' sound back to the dancefloor, and i'm totally loving it

the other day i asked myspace music to give me something "psychedelic".
-among the hit or miss results was the band APES & ANDROIDS

i'v been enjoying a few of their songs. their album Blood Moon boasts 18 tracks, and is like, one of those "psychedelic journey" kind of affairs.
now, i'm a singles guy, not an album guy, so i'm not surprised that i'm not 'totally appreciating' the album as a whole [or maybe i'm just not listening to it on the right drugs]

but, there are a few songs that i'm really liking, even if there's more that i don't like.
the band's sound ranges from classic rock guitar work, to hot chip -esque beats, to freddie mercury style falsettos, to folksy male harmonies, all with a heavy wash of psych effects and arrangements

riverside is my fave. it almost seems very unexpected in the context of the rest of the album. simple acoustic guitar work and nice folk harmonies open the song and carefully guide you along as the echoes and effects start to build. brass ushers in the real percussion and more dramatic effects. it just feels good. it's a great listen on a pair of good loud headphones

i'm particularly impressed by this band because the singing is, at times, actually melodic/on pitch/vocally interesting/significantly more 'musical' than most other pop/rock

THNX P4K! [airborne toxic event] ---{1.6 review}

for once, a pitchfork review has actually encouraged me to download [in blog lyfestyle that equates to buy] an album. the review of note was of the band The Airborne Toxic Event. there's been all kindsa chatter about pitchfork's scathing review recently...[if you really care about reading that shit do some googling/hypem'ing] but seriously, i downloaded the album before i even listened to it.

important points: Airborne Toxic scored a 1.6 for being 'inauthentic' and simply ripping motifs from some [of my favorite] bands [arcade fire, bright eyes, killers, strokes].

well, i figured if pitchfork hated them so bad, they might have some redeeming qualities.

also, i kinda have a theme in my life of identifying 'popular' aesthetics/styles/themes and shallowly or cheaply reproducing/reinventing them. [example: i unashamedly window shop urban outfitters then go to Salvation Army to buy similar clothes] so i thought perhaps Airborne Toxic and i were casts of the same mold.

sooo... Airborne Toxic Event seemed more and more appealing the more i read of the horrible pitchfork review. consequently, i have now been listening to some of my favorite musical motifs in a compact, easy to consume, worry-free, upbeat, party-ready album.

SLARAFFENLAND Sunshine EP

i started listening to SLARAFFENLAND way back when i lived On Campus, and i was tired of indie pop. at the time my only exposure with 'post rock' was sigur ros and explosions in the sky. now, it's not like i'm trying to call slaraffenland post rock, but when i first encountered them i could only describe them to myself as somesort of mixture of the two post rock bands i knew.

their sound has developed in a good way, and i'm excited for their upcoming EP, Sunshine, which will be released Oct. 7. in ways these new tunes sound more lyrical and intimate with soft handclaps, plucky guitars, and un-strained singing, but they don't lose the dramatic instrumentation that caught my attention at first.

Cambridge, Mass. quintet PASSION PIT just released their much anticipated debut ep Chunk of Change via Frenchkiss Records.

the band rocked my life with Sleepy Head, and continue to impress with this release.

i'm enjoying two of the more "chill" tracks. these two songs make me think of The Postal Service on some sort of fun-loving smiledrugs. [which is what i always wanted The Postal Service to be (actually, i think i would like most songs better if the music was injected with the sound of fun-loving drugzz)]

PASSION PIT - live to tell the tale
Live to Tell the Tale exceeds the expectations i had of it after hearing a demo version. This song makes me think about holding hands, getting tickled just the right amount, laying in the sunlight, maybe having a good stretch, smiling about leaves or colors or something, and then dancing aimlessly around, and thinking

PASSION PIT - smile upon me
Smile Upon Me has great texture and layering. It feels like watching traffic go by in fast forward while drinking an espresso REALL slow, or spinning around with only the best colors with a close friend, and maybe there's no gravity? [mother fuckin space olympics?]. This is a nice little song about friendship and 'smiling upon', with really fun clicks, beats, and synth awesomyness...

GENTLEMAN AUCTION HOUSE are 7 people that hail from Saint Louis, MO
they've recently released their first full length after two impressive EPs

released July 22, Alphabet Graveyard has a little bit of everything [by 'everything' i mean a variety of related things (it has good portions of a variety of things i like)]

it has just the right mixture of energizing rock, innovative indie pop, whispery vocals, soaring choruses, thrilling trumpet blares, captivating xylophone solos, funk grooves, piano rock melodies, post-punk break outs, lyrics, drums, energizing post-rock style builds, jangly tambourines, thumping sing-alongs, [and probably even more pointlessly "descriptive" music buzz-phrases that i can't think of right now.] listen to a few tracks off of Alphabet Graveyard below and find out for yourself

abcdefgraveyard is just the right kind of catchy, variety-pop with a strong enough party-playable feel to catch my attention and get me really interested in the rest of their songs

the opener, call it casual showcases the band's appropriate use of a variety of instruments, including trumpet, xylophone, flute, and piano [not to mention the rock band standards], and varied vocal delivery ranging from sing-songy speaking to male/female harmonies. the tinkly xylophone adds a touch of indie-pop innocence that is balanced well by strong rock moments brought out with the trumpet and drums and guitar
GENTLEMAN AUCTION HOUSE - call it casual

good behavior is a nice little whispery love ditty that is so hopeful and adventurous that i can't help but sink into its simple melody and intimate lyrics. this is one of the most honest love songs i'v heard in a while. it feels like the tenative, unexpected, nervous first encounter between two people who know nothing about each other, and all they have to rely on is an innocent hopefulness. "come meet me in the middle of a known mistake".
GENTLEMAN AUCTION HOUSE - good behavior

if good behavior is the sweet, tender, beginning of a night with a new lover, if i'm the first to go is its morning-after counterpart, with all its hidden insecurities and uncertainties, but full of the rightfully appropriate heart pounding exuberance. [i dance to this one in the basement]
GENTLEMAN AUCTION HOUSE - if i'm the first to go

a good son is a great closer for the album. in this final track, GENTLMAN AUCTION HOUSE puts it all together in a case study of post-prendie song structure: simple mellow intro, build-up, layered instruments, release, build up, steady repetitive chorus, release, build-up, release, build-up, crash, release, wind down.

[what's up with that town anyway? it sounds like a fun place] but apparently, according to their myspace, these songs aren't just fun - their like, totally deep and meangful and stuff too. apparently.

regardless, they have some great tunes.
vocals trip back and forth between male and female in that "this song is probably about relationships in some way but i'm not really quite sure how" way, which gives these otherwise possibly all-too-standard electropop songs a sense of freshness.
their abbreviatedly-titled title track P.G.D.M immediatly forces me to draw the MGMT comparison. [i can't help myself, i don't see any reason i should be ashamed of being obsessed with MGMT] the echoey vocals would be no stranger on Oracular Spectacular, and the variation in beat style and synth effects reminds me of the electropsych that MGMT does so well. and the title is four capital letters. if only they'd abbreviate the whole name of their band to PGDM, i'd be absolutely hooked/they'd be complete posseurs.
